Weekend Kickoff: Windpipe Miracle

From the desk of Jackie:

After scouring the Internet throughout the week, trying to find an upbeat news piece to highlight in our Weekend Kickoff segment (always a difficult task), I came across this uplifting story of a young girl who has essentially been “re-born.”  Until just this month, two-year old Hannah Warren has spent her entire life living in a hospital in Seoul, South Korea, due to a windpipe defect which left her unable to breathe, eat, drink, or swallow.  Doctors in that hospital informed Hannah’s family that there was no way to help her condition and that she would likely die.  But, just last month, Hannah and her family traveled to a hospital here in the United States, where doctors performed an experimental surgery by which they utilized stem cells taken from Hannah’s own bone marrow in order to create a new windpipe for her.  Since Kelly is the medical professional here, I will spare you any attempt to dive into scientific details of which I have no comprehension.  However, all of us lay people can understand the following: Hannah’s new windpipe seems to be functioning properly and she is expected to soon be able to live a normal life at home with her family.  This success makes Hannah the youngest person to have benefited from this cutting edge stem cell surgery.  Perhaps even more exciting (or at least equally exciting), Hannah will be able to eat soon.  Doctors have already given her an opportunity to taste food for the first time, by letting her try lollipops.  It turns out she prefers chocolate Korean lollipops to American-made ones!
